International capital flows database
from "Sovereigns, Upstream Capital Flows, and Global Imbalances" by Alfaro, Kalemli-Ozcan & Volosovych
   Welcome      Panel Data
Here one can download the annual panel dataset of net private and public capital flows over 1970s - 2015 following the methods of Alfaro, Kalemli-Ozcan and Volosovych (2014).
When using these data,  the appropriate reference is "the updated and extended version of dataset of net private and public capital flows constructed by Alfaro, Kalemli-Ozcan and Volosovych (2014)" with citation of the paper, Alfaro, Laura, Sebnem Kalemli-Ozcan and Vadym Volosovych (2014). Sovereigns, Upstream Capital Flows and Global Imbalances. Journal of European Economic Association, 2014, vol. 12, iss. 5, 1240-1284.

The original paper used the data up to 2007 while the most recent (17 August 2015) release of the dataset extends the coverage up to 2015. In particular, the raw debt data now relies on three sources a) the World Debt Tables (the predecessor of the GDF) for 1970-1992 [Source: World Bank. Debt and International Finance Division. World Debt Tables, 1970-1992. ICPSR08313-v2. Ann Arbor, MI: Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research [distributor], 2010-01-26. Persistent URL http://doi.org/10.3886/ICPSR08313.v2]; b) the histroic CDs of GDF with the issue dates of March 1999 - April 2005; and c) the vintages of WB-GDF and  International Development Statistics (IDS) as available at http://data.worldbank.org/data-catalog/international-debt-statistics with the issue dates of Nov 2005 - December 2015, updated in Sept 2020.
In addition, we rely on the IDS online database from the OECD, accessed in in Sept 2020 (http://www.oecd.org/development/stats/idsonline.htm) for aid flows data; some data from the IMF's International Financial Statistics database, accessed in November 2016  (http://data.imf.org/); and updated and extended to 2015 dataset by Lane, P.R., Milesi-Ferretti, G.M. The External Wealth of Nations Revisited: International Financial Integration in the Aftermath of the Global Financial Crisis. IMF Econ Rev 66, 189–222 (2018). (https://doi.org/10.1057/s41308-017-0048-yfor alternative measures of debt flows.
